BMRC Launches the Year with the First Meeting of the Technical and Strategic Councils under the CORFO Project

Within the framework of the project Technological Consortium in Applied Biomedicine for the Development and Transfer of Solutions in the Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Human Diseases, the Biomedical Research Consortium (BMRC) held the first meeting of its Technical and Strategic Councils of the year on January 7. This meeting constituted a key instance for monitoring progress and defining the future direction of the initiatives that comprise the consortium.

This meeting responds to the requirements established by Corfo, through its Technological Capabilities Division, which mandate the establishment of two monitoring committees. On the one hand, the Technical Council is responsible for supporting and supervising the scientific and operational aspects of the projects. On the other, the Strategic Council focuses on assessing the consortium’s coordination with other initiatives, as well as its technology transfer strategies and long-term outlook.

The consortium is led by Dr. Alexis Kalergis, Director of BMRC, Full Professor at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and Director of Project 3.0, together with Dr. Susan Bueno, Researcher and Alternate Director of Project 3.0, and Rebeca Ibacache, General Manager of BMRC. The project’s governance structure also includes representatives from partner companies such as Abbott and Igloo Zone, co-executing institutions, and external researchers, in line with the public-private nature that characterizes technological consortia.

The session was held in a hybrid format, with both in-person and remote participation via Microsoft Teams, and took place at the Rector’s Dining Hall of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Over the course of approximately two hours, council members and representatives from Corfo, universities, and companies reviewed the technical and administrative progress of the consortium, as well as revisited the main agreements and observations raised during the previous meeting.

One of the central moments of the session was the presentation by Dr. Pablo González, Principal Investigator at IMII and Full Professor at UC, who presented progress on the project entitled “Scaling-up of Biological Products under Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) Conditions.” The presentation provided in-depth insight into the technical and regulatory challenges associated with scaling biomedical developments, as well as their potential for transfer into concrete health applications.

With this first meeting of 2026, BMRC launches a new cycle of project monitoring, strengthening evaluation, coordination, and decision-making mechanisms aimed at ensuring that the consortium’s scientific developments advance consistently toward implementation and transfer to the productive and healthcare sectors.
